Table A(cont.): Selected Characteristics of Active Local Doctors Enumerated in Health Manpower Survey by Survey Year (1982-2023) In the 2005 Health Manpower Survey, 10427 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5498 active doctors were enumerated. There were 4037 male, 1458 female and three doctors did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 43.9 and median age was 42.0. Their sex ratio was 277 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5498 active doctors enumerated, 302(5.5%) worked in the Government, 2569(46.7%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 192(3.5%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors, and 2417(44.0%) worked in the private sector, and 18(0.3%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2006 Health Manpower Survey, 10695 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5358 active doctors were enumerated. There were 3880 male, 1474 female and four doctors did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 44.3 and median age was 42.0. Their sex ratio was 263 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5358 active doctors enumerated, 303(5.7%) worked in the Government, 2449(45.7%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2395(44.7%) worked in the private sector, 186(3.5%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 25(0.5%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2007 Health Manpower Survey, 10951 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5444 active doctors were enumerated. There were 3903 male, 1541 female. Their mean age was 44.8 and median age was 43.0. Their sex ratio was 253 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5444 active doctors enumerated, 288(5.3%) worked in the Government, 2482(45.6%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2490(45.7%) worked in the private sector, 181(3.3%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and three(0.1%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2009 Health Manpower Survey, 11495 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 6900 active doctors were enumerated. There were 4844 male, 1918 female and 138 did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 46.5 and median age was 45.0. The sex ratio was 253 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 6900 active doctors enumerated, 348(5.0%) worked in the Government, 2911(42.2%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 3388(49.1%) worked in the private sector, 219(3.2%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 34(0.5%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2012 Health Manpower Survey, 12176 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5837 active doctors were enumerated. There were 3979 male, 1769 female and 89 did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 47.9 and median age was 47.0. The sex ratio was 225 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5837 active doctors enumerated, 347(5.9%) worked in the Government, 2444(41.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2821(48.3%) worked in the private sector, 201(3.4%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 24(0.4%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2015 Health Manpower Survey, 12982 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5566 active doctors were enumerated. There were 3771 male, 1726 female and 69 did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 48.9 and median age was 48.0. The sex ratio was 218 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5566 active doctors enumerated, 286(5.1%) worked in the Government, 2325(41.8%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2720(48.9%) worked in the private sector, 213(3.8%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 22(0.4%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2018 Health Manpower Survey, 13993 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 5597 active doctors were enumerated. There were 3679 male, 1837 female and 81 did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 50.1 and median age was 50.0. The sex ratio was 200 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 5597 active doctors enumerated, 285(5.1%) worked in the Government, 2336(41.7%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2767(49.4%) worked in the private sector, 196(3.5%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 13(0.2%) did not reveal their sector of work. In the 2023 Health Manpower Survey, 15720 doctors with full registration and on resident list covered and 4640 active doctors were enumerated. There were 2918 male, 1477 female and 245 did not reveal their gender. Their mean age was 52.7 and median age was 53.0. The sex ratio was 198 male active doctors enumerated per 100 female active doctors enumerated. Among the 4640 active doctors enumerated, 224(4.8%) worked in the Government, 1710(36.9%) worked in the Hospital Authority, 2529(54.5%) worked in the private sector, 147(3.2%) worked in the academic & subvented sectors and 30(0.6%) did not reveal their sector of work. Notes: 1. Figures of 2000 and before refer to the number of doctors fully registered with the Medical Council of Hong Kong on the resident list as at the 1st July of the respective years, whereas the figure of 2003 refers to that as at the 31st December 2003 and the figures of 2004 to 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015 and 2018 refer to that as at the 31st August of the respective years. Figures of 2023 refers to the number of doctors who were fully registered with the Medical Council of Hong Kong under the Medical Registration Ordinance (Chapter 161) as at the survey reference date of 31 August 2023 and listed on the resident list of the Medical Register as at 30 November 2023. 2. In 2003 to 2007, 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2023, the sector refers to the sector for the main job. 3. Before 1992, doctors in the public sector were classified as working for the Government. Since 1992, public sector doctors have been categorised separately under the Hospital Authority and the Government. 4. Military was included in the 1984, 1987, 1992 and 1996 HMS. 5.
